We have been breeding a long time now and are starting to get an increase in the number of people coming to us who have had Siamese & Orientals die young from a range of diseases. While we have had none reported in our own lines, it did get us thinking. So we have done some research and decided to get our cats tested to rule out any issues.
All our breeding cats have been tested and are cleared for the following hereditary diseases well known in Siamese and Orientals:
Pyruvate Kinase (PK) Deficiency
Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA - CEP 290)
A note regarding Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) - this is becoming progressively more well known and common in the oriental/siamese breeding world. We have been in touch with the most prominent researcher in the US (Leslie Lyons) and advised for this breed type there is only one confirmed test - ultrasound. An ultrasound is $400-$500 per animal. Its my understanding the problem with HCM in Siamese/Orientals is that it cannot be definitively ruled out - even if an ultrasound is completed it is an indication that the cat does not have HCM AT THAT POINT IN TIME. It does not mean they will never develop it. Current recommendations are to complete an ultrasound prior to breeding, and again every couple of years.
We have not yet completed any ultrasounds, primarily because we have had no reason to suspect it in our breeding lines. We have 5 generations of our line in our cattery, we have had no issues with our own cats, nor any reported to us from kittens we have sold.
We encourage all new (and existing!) parents of our kittens to get in touch with us should anything arise, and allow us to talk to your vet. This enables us to provide parentage and genetic history to assist with the kitten's health, and also makes us aware if there is something we should test our own cats for.
Every care is taken to provide happy and healthy kittens - and that is our most important goal.

At Jayallwend Siamese we specialise in breeding pedigree Siamese & Oriental Ebony kittens.
We are a small breeding cattery, consisting of mother and daughter team (Wendy & Joni). Together we have been breeding for more than 40 years. We breed for enjoyment and pleasure, and only have a few litters available per year.

These are PEDIGREE Siamese & Oriental kittens, registered with the New Zealand Cat Fancy (www.nzcatfancy.gen.nz). They are different from pure bred cats bred by backyard breeders in that their lineage can be traced and the breeders themselves must be registered and have codes to follow. We have over 40 years of combined experience but do not have a large breeding cattery. We do this simply for the enjoyment & pleasure, which is why we only have a couple of litters available per year. We will only sell our kittens to good homes, so please do not be offended if we ask questions. Our thoughts, first & foremost, go with the kittens, so knowing the environment they are going into is important to us, and enables us to ensure a perfect fit with you and your new kitten.
We can & do send kittens throughout the country, having homed our kittens in Christchurch, Dunedin, Wellington & up to Auckland with many repeating the experience to add to their new cat family.
All our kittens come desexed, wormed, de-flead, first vaccination (including vet check), pedigree (which shows their ancestors back to great, great grandparents), & our special kitten pack, which includes a full information sheet, food, blanket, toy, pet insurance etc. Wendy also microchips your kitten and lists the details on the New Zealand Companion Animal Register (www.animalregister.co.nz).

Great communication and advice with the breeder Joni. The whole process of getting our kitten was easy and Joni accomodated our request to delay receiving our kitten.
The kitten was already potty trained which was a bonus!
Billy the cat has taken over our house and sleeps on my pillow!...but that's why we went for a Siamese :-)

We are absolutely delighted with our new young man, Jayallwend Huawei, who has settled in well after a few feeding issues. We have now been trained in what he likes and he is putting on weight. He has bonded well with our older female Siamese and they now play and cuddle up together. He is affectionate and chatty with us and is already a Daddy's boy. We think he is very clever as he has sorted out the cat door, follows commands and plays go fetch. We love him to bits!
