Overview
Pedigree Pets is the premiere place to buy and sell a pedigree pet. A specialty, purpose built site connecting reputable breeders with quality homes with built in education and support.
Firstly, what is a pedigree pet?
A pedigree pet is one that is bred by a registered breeder, is registered with a governing body and is sold with papers showing generational lineage and registry number with the associated body. Registering bodies within New Zealand include the New Zealand Cat Fancy Incorporate and Catz Incorporated for cats, and the New Zealand Dog World for dogs.
What is a registered breeder?
In order to be a registered breeder there are specific codes of conduct to follow with their chosen registering body, ethics and membership requirements. These include minimum health and safety requirements for the animals in their care. The pets are then bred with other pedigree pets of the same breed to produce offspring, which can be traced for multiple generations. These are then able to be certified as being the advertised breed.
How do you know they are a registered breeder?
The only way to confirm they are a registered breeder is to contact the governing body and check all information provided by the breeder matches that with the governing body.
What is a “backyard” breeder?
A “backyard” breeder is anyone who is selling a particular breed of animal that are not a member of a registering body.
What are designer animals?
This is where 2 breeds are crossed to create a “new” breed. These animals are generally the result of human tampering without proper consideration to the genetics of either breed. They are likely not to have been genetically tested and are bred solely for the look and often by inexperienced breeders, so its possible the offspring will carry the genetic defects of both breeds and can make for extremely sick animals. These pets are often sold at higher prices than a pet which is registered and comes with full pedigree. Within the registering bodies there is the ability to cross breeds, but significant research is completed and permission requested before these are allowed. The health and wellbeing of the animals should always come first.
BUYERS
Reputable breeders care about what types of home their kittens are going to and look for homes that will be their forever one. Animals are not a whim or short term purchase, cats can live up to 20 years and some dog breeds can live well into their teens also. Its important to consider this purchase seriously before committing.
Each buyer who registers with Pedigree Pets will be required to complete a questionnaire, providing information on the type of home the animal will be going into and detailing any previous experience with the breed. It will also include your requirements regarding breed types, locations and breeder preferences.
When you find a pet or a breeder you are interested in, simply send a message via the Expression of Interest to get in touch with the breeder.
